Why did 41 action express fail?

I remember in the late 80's this was going to be "The Bullet". 10mm was struggling then, but it did survive, but 41AE disappeared and even empty cases are hard to find to reload.

Numbers. The .40s&w took off as an offshoot of the 10mm and when the FBI and LE started ordering large numbers of them it naturally became dominant. The bullet manufacturers could use the same bullets they had for the 10mm, and the brass manufacturers didn't have to do major retooling. The ballistics of the .41ae weren't that much more impressive than the 9mm. The 10mm was essentially saved by Glock when they came out with the G20 early on hoping to catch the nascent FBI market, and since Glock doesn't discontinue any of their line, it was still around when hunters picked up on it as a very capable handgun hunting round which helped it survive. Now you are seeing the 10mm as the primary viable option of having magnum power in an autoloader for anyone wanting a very capable defense round as well as hunting round.

I love the 10mm. It has some of the widest range of capability you can find in an autoloader package. Since I'm not much of a fan of revolvers, it's the choice for someone wanting to be able to load down to mild for plinking, to nuclear for hunting deer or hogs, all in the same gun.

    Because I love this pic:

I'd say that's spot on. That's what I've read on why Jericho pistols dumped the .41AE for the .40 and .45.

    Nice picture BTW.

The 41 AE failed for the same reason the 41 Rem Mag failed - it was a good cartridge, but it never had its own niche.

If you're looking for 41AE reloading data, I've heard that you can use 40 S&W data to load the cartridge, although you're going to have a harder time finding a steady supply of .41cal semi-auto bullets (read:without cannelure).

Overall, it was a good cartridge, kinda like the .357 SIG, it was manufactured to replicate the ballistics of its same calibered revolvers, but in a smaller semi-auto package. Never really caught on in the US though, and unfortunatly it was so short lived that most modern reloading manuals don't even include it.

And Mark is correct about why the 10mm still exists. It wholly owes its existence to two guns - the Glock 20 and the Delta Elite - both outstanding firearms, by the way.

Aszerigan.... You just mentioned three of my favorite cartridges. I am a big fan of the 41Mag. and the 357Sig. As for the 10mm, if I could only have just one gun it would be chambered in 10mm. As for the Glock and Delta Elite allow me to expand on this list with the Kimber and Tanfoglio Witness. Both companies make excellent 10mm. R S

For some reason my post appears twice. Don't see a way to delete one of them. Sorry for my 10 thumb approach to my post. R S
